External links

Links are connections between two different Web pages. A link is text that you can click on, after which you are taken to another web page. You can also add a link behind an image so that when you click on the image, you are taken to another web page. But where are external links used for exactly? And is it wise to use external links?

What are external links?

Actually, the Internet is a collection of pages connected to each other. Some of these are external links(1). An external link always points to a page on another domain, unlike an internal link that points to a page within the same domain.

External links are very important for a website to rank well. Therefore, external links are also often at the top of the list within an SEO strategy.

Examples of external links

You come across external links all over the Internet. Think of this as an advertisement that you click on, after which you are taken to the advertiser’s website. It is also sometimes necessary to refer in a website text to another relevant article listed on another website.

External links are also often found in blogs written by another entrepreneur, linking to the guest blogger’s website.

The importance of external links

Linking from one Web site to another is an important part of a good SEO strategy. I use external links with names to indicate quality sources within written content.

Particularly important for E-E-A-T that these sources are displayed when claims are made in content. I personally use APA to put the sources in correctly, but of course it’s hard to say if this is also important to Google this way. You should always keep in mind, what works for my target audience and in what way am I delivering value with these external links?

The impact of external links

The impact of external links depends on a number of factors. For example, external links must be relevant to the web page. In addition, it is also wise to link to a website with high domain authority. These are often websites that are major players in a particular field.

My advice

It is definitely recommended to use external links on your website if you want to rank well in terms of SEO. Search engines like it when you show that you are social and link to other websites in your website texts. So be sure to start looking for relevant external links if you want your website to rank well in the search engines.
