How can you learn SEO (and what is it)?
SEO, or search engine optimization, is the process of improving your Web site to rank higher in the search results of search engines such as Google. The higher your website appears in search results, the more likely people are to visit your site. SEO is important because it helps generate organic traffic to your website without having to pay for ads. This traffic can lead to more customers, higher sales and greater brand awareness.
The basics of SEO
Before delving into the more complex aspects of SEO, it is important to have a good understanding of the basics. Here are some of the key components:
- Keyword research: This is the process of identifying the words and phrases people use to search for your products or services. These keywords form the core of your SEO strategy.
- On-page SEO: This refers to the optimizations you can make on your own website, such as optimizing title tags, meta descriptions, URL structures and the use of keywords in your content.
- Off-page SEO: This includes factors outside your website, such as link building, social media marketing, and building authority and trust through external links.

If you’re new to SEO, there are plenty of resources available to get you started. Here are some steps to get started(beyond my SEO course):
- Read blogs and guides: Websites such as Moz, Ahrefs, and SEMrush (and my blog) offer comprehensive guides and articles on the basics of SEO. Start with their beginner’s guides to build a solid foundation.
- Watch videos and webinars: YouTube is a great resource for SEO tutorials. Channels such as Neil Patel, Backlinko, and SEMrush offer videos that cover topics from beginner to advanced levels.
Practical ways to practice SEO
Learning theory is important, but SEO is something you really learn by putting it into practice. Here are some ways to practice your skills:
- Start a blog or website: This gives you a chance to experiment with SEO in a real environment. Write articles, optimize them for keywords, and monitor how they perform in search engines. This is also how I learned SEO; working on my own websites.
- Work on an existing project: If you already have a Web site, start applying your SEO knowledge to improve visibility. Analyze your current content and make optimizations.
- Do freelance work or internships: Freelance projects or internships with companies that need SEO support will give you valuable hands-on experience and help you develop your skills.
Advanced SEO techniques to learn
Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can delve into more advanced SEO techniques:
- Local SEO: This is especially important for businesses that have a physical location. Learn how to optimize your Google My Business profile and target local keywords.
- Technical SEO: Delve into topics such as website architecture, crawl budget, and structured data (schema markup) to help search engines better understand your content.
- Content Marketing and SEO Integration: Learn how to develop a content strategy that integrates SEO with content marketing to increase both visibility and engagement.
