How do you build an SEO strategy that is also GEO-proof?
For a very long time, the classic SEO strategy was: optimization for the SERP. SEO specialists often only pay attention to rankings, CTR and structured snippets. With the rise of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), it is important to look at SEO differently. Search engines now create their own content based on semantics, entities and context, so traditional optimization no longer helps you. So develop an SEO strategy that works for SEO as practiced so far, and in the AI-driven search model.
What does GEO-proofing mean in practice?
GEO resilience means that your content and its structure are designed in such a way that they not only rank in search engines, but can also be included in generated AI responses. Your content should be recognized by fragment-level language models and structure and semantics that enable inclusion in AI interfaces. Also make sure the domain structure aligns with how AI evaluates your authority and makes connections.
So a GEO-proof strategy goes beyond keyword usage or technical SEO. I often see that you need to pay more and more attention to connections in your content and whether you are answering search intentions. In doing so, you lay the foundation for content that is not only found, but understood. (1)
Here’s how to ensure a GEO-proof SEO approach
For a strong strategy, it is important to pay attention to a number of points to ensure that your SEO strategy works.
1. Topical authority based on entity and semantics
Build your content around concepts and topics that are related in a logical way. So come up with a number of topics and subtopics and don’t just plug your texts into keywords. In fact, AI models select sources that are strongly related in terms of themes. (2)
2. Content modularity and fragmentability.
The structure of your texts is increasingly important in my experience. Make sure that each part of your page is independently understandable. That way you’ll be included in AI responses faster with individual pieces of text.
3. Drive inclusion in AI-generated answers, rather than just ranking
Make your texts stronger in terms of content, so that people get good answers by reading your texts. So don’t just target traffic with your texts. Ask the right questions and provide appropriate answers, in key phrases and explicit explanations for each topic. (3)
In this way, you are well prepared for SERP changes AND also have a chance of AI integrations in the search interface.

Technical preconditions
With a good GEO approach, it is also important that your content is technically correct. For example, I deploy structured data to create valuable AI answers, not just providing snippets. Structured data helps search engines not only read the content of your page, but also understand the meaning and relationships between components.
In doing so, you make your content semantically indexable. This is something essential for inclusion in AI answers.
So make sure you set Robots.txt so that AI crawlers can access it. Build your site architecture modularly so that content is semantically logically navigable.
By aligning technical and content signals, you ensure that your site is well read and understood, not only by crawlers, but also by humans.
Here’s how I developed a GEO-proof strategy for a B2B software company
I reviewed the SEO strategy for an international B2B software company. This company wanted to become GEO-proof. Before, they were paying particular attention to keywords and snippets, but not semantic relationships. I rewrote their content so that the texts were written around core topics. I made sure to describe the themes that really define the brand.
We then built the pages modularly, so that each piece of text stood on its own. After just a few months, we saw that the content was being picked up more often in AI listings and that the site was gaining higher topical authority within its niche. The work for this client confirmed for me that GEO-proof SEO is not about more content, but about well-structured context.
A good measurement strategy for GEO impact
GEO strategies are evaluated differently than classic SEO. Traffic and CTR were important, but I’m now looking at things like AI-generated responses. Is your content being reused in those generated answers? Also consider questions like, “How broadly and deeply do you cover a topic within your domain? And, ‘Which AI agents visit your content, and how often?’
The answer to these questions will give you a good idea of how well your content functions within the AI search landscape.
Summary
If you want a GEO-resistant SEO strategy, pay attention to word meaning, structure as well as content completeness in the service of AI processability.
By approaching content as a source of AI answers (rather than just as a search result), you are preparing your business for an online future that is increasingly AI-generated.
SEO remains important, but is changing from an end to a means. Those who understand this shift will be ahead and score.
Frequently asked questions about GEO-proof SEO
GEO is not yet well understood by many people. That’s why I answer some of the questions I often get.
What is the main difference between classic SEO and GEO-proof SEO?
In classic SEO, you optimize primarily for visibility in the SERP: keywords, click-through rate and structured snippets are therefore important in classic SEO.
GEO-proof SEO is about meaning and relationships. Create a network of subtopics that can be recognized by AI models. As a result, your content will not only be found but also reused in generated responses. (4)
How do you recognize if your content is being used in AI responses?
You won’t see this directly in Google Analytics, but there are things you can pay attention to. When you have your structured data in place and your content is modular, AI is more likely to adopt fragments of your text. So I watch for signals that are a little hidden, such as unexpected increases in branded mentions by AI tools or changing impressions without seeing more conversions.
What is the first step toward a GEO-proof strategy?
Start by setting up a good content structure. See what topics are important to you and connect them by creating content clusters. Then add structured data, but of course also content texts. Personally, I always start with a content audit to see what topics I need to cover. Then you’re all set for the GEO strategy.
